A Moonlight Serenade Like the green grey marbles in the temple Your eyes look at the lands in sheer wonder You being here so near still makes me tremble Like the water of a moonlit river The simple flitter of light and shadow Has moved great hearts and minds to consider How the divine in places high and low Caress those moments of nature's preludes To its noblest aims in ways we would know That all amorous acts and words are the clues Of how ancient particles were arranged To render virtues in the shapes of nudes In the way they were born ever unchanged Fecund in body moving in a dance Unaware of the brave new world estranged From its source all induced into a trance The dancing figure has the same broad hip That I saw painted on a bright red wall I describe this as you sit there and sip On a blood red orange juice or what you call Spremuta d'arancio that might remind you Of dreams one had in a departure hall Of moonlit places and skies of dark blue Where watery sounds spout from marble fountains Carving in your mind a life with a hue Of sunsets glowing on roofs and mountains If the future is made by pleasant deeds One may well start by discarding curtains And welcome the colours of all that breathes Dawn till dusk city streets to fields of wheat I learnt with you what were our truest needs The hopes with which each morning we do greet
