Football Nerves

Terse fingers shall cross during a football match
Where luck plays an important role, even though
Money and lots of it has been spent such that
Even if the fingers are not crossed tersely enough
The result is a forgone conclusion every time.

So what does it mean to play a football match,
If the result is already, more or less, decided?

How gallant are the journeymen on the lower pay
As they defend in the hope money does not matter
And that they may be more than mere hurdles
To the victory in the bag presumed by the poodles
Watching the wizardry where the lines are drawn.

So on a rare counter-attack, apart from running
How could a goal be scored by the poorer team?

Clubs tend to spend, not equally, on defenders
As they do on the strikers, leaving holes where
A poorer team, with a bit of gumption could go
To find the necessary trajectory arching past
The best goalkeeper in the world, of whom
It has been proven, that even he shall fail
When faced with genuine guts and nonchalance.
