Champion of the World

Yes by some good fortune today I met
Someone who looked like a Roman soldier.
He took me and young Xavier past the bends
To the foothills of glory and of hope.

It was as slushy as a road could get
And like St George the keen dragon slayer,
He did not worry about the means and ends,
Full speed, wheels spinning their way up the slope.

I knew not that I would be on a boat
Lurching side to side through a narrow moat
When earth turns into a dough made of mud.
Any moment we could spin and go, thud!

My man kept on smiling as he did this.
He said once he wanted to be an ace
In a racing car, a consumate whiz.
For me he was the champion of the world.
