A Quiet Town
How one lives is a temporary question for an individual but a permanent one for society. We have fallen into the trap by the word "globalisation" and the other even more euphemistic words "global village" into thinking that there can only be one kind of human society; that there can only be one model for the economy built on the fatal assumption (based on a well-meaning misreading of what is meant by 'equality') that human beings all have the same desires, expectations and aspirations. WRONG! We are bound by the actuality of the human scale to live in smaller societies confined by the natural limits of our comprehensions. If crops need diversity, so do humans. People need to belong to communities of such a size that will allow them as individuals to participate fully and unabashedly in its life. We must not become disenfranchised from our own natures. It is amazing how many people I know just assume that modern conveniences appear for free. It is amazing how many people live every day worrying about nothing else than their personal health. Ironically while they visit a doctor every week for check-ups, they consume stale food unknowingly modified in a refrigerator and take vegetables from sealed plastic bags. In the meantime that pattern of anxious living becomes a life. It is a strange pathos that reeks of formaldehyde. |
