Interior Design

The contrived interior has become one of the favourite subjects of photography. They are to be found in a myriad of magazine names. "Architectural Digest" comes to mind. Design magazines have a certain fascination because of the overarching attraction in the modern culture for novelty.

In turn these seemingly harmless photographs have a deep effect on the modern psyche. The magazines continue to sell because it creates a dependence. Without looking at examples, the minds untrained in the art of memory cannot begin to design that desired improved future. What the future would have been without this imagining, one doesn't know. Perhaps it would have been free of plastic laminates.

They say it's about taste but it seems to be more than that. In English we are burdened with the phrase 'to like'. In Romance languages, the equivalent expression is 'to please'. In the former the active component is oneself, the subject, whilst in the latter the active component is the object in question. There is a seemingly only a subtle difference but on further pondering, considerable differences can be noted in the interpreting the role of judgement in each case.
