Aspirations

There is something fatally attractive about glass to the modern mindset. Our forefathers during the Gothic era did a lot with coloured glass but would not have imagined that one day glass would wrap around 200 storey towers.

The other day, I was at a lighting shop and came upon the object shown in the photo. It reminded me of an office building that might be designed by someone like Norman Foster or Renzo Piano. Basically an elogated box with a glass covering, it is simple yet it evokes a certain aspiration. "Less is More" to quote Mies Van der Rohe.

How would the lamp look lit? There was a metal spine that had halogen fittings attached. Blowing this might well make a building, a giant lamp. To a humanist mind a multi-storey tower may be conceptually improbable. But Man - we have found a way to fly!
