The Theatre

If we neglect the theatre, we neglect our souls. The stage is not the theatre. The seats not the theatre. It is the union of the two parts. It is the human voice heard in verse that is the theatre. The theatre is where the sore and caressing truths about life can be told. Yes, they are stories, mere stories, but they are also truths that we all want to partake in. So there we gather to prepare the play but who built the theatre?

An architect who gets to build a theatre is a lucky fellow for he has a chance to make a place that connects with the multiple realities of human drama, the many truths; the many deceptions caught out; not to punish but to forgive.

The theatre must express a tangible sense of airy volume. This is the volume of the human emotion. As an actor speaks, he is suspended in the time and space that the theatre allows. The make-believe is the reality. We are all involved. This sharing creates a new meaning. It is a secular ritual: the enactment of the suspension of belief.
